Sthephan G. Stephansson Poetry

THE DEFEAT

He promised us promises no man could keep,
when scrounging his votes from the gullible herd –
but the people struck lucky, the climb proved too steep,
he wasn't voted in to go back on his word.

But do not blame fate, which spells all men's demise –
he faced an opponent who was more than fair game,
even more skilful at plotting and lies,
and who promised exactly the same.
